One of the most challenging situations in all of dentistry is seamlessly matching one or two crowns to natural teeth. Natural teeth posses unique optical properties and random colors that can be extremely challenging to invisibly match. Fortunately current generations of ceramic materials provide us with the strength and beauty necessary to provide cosmetic solutions in extremely challenging situations. Justin’s situation perfectly exemplifies the ultimate in esthetic challenges, the need to work in “mixed media”. While difficult, matching a crown or veneer to adjacent teeth is readily handled by the accomplished cosmetic dentist. However when one finds it necessary to have one of each, a crown and a veneer, and match those to each other and to the adjacent natural teeth, the difficulty multiplies geometrically. Justin’s needs were for a crown on the right central incisor, due to the extent of the fracturing present, and a veneer on the left central incisor, as a consequence of a fracture across the body of the tooth internally. Through the proper application of ceramic technologies, digital photography and shade matching, and considerable experience, we were able to give Justin a cosmetically exceptional and conservative outcome.
