Oral Appliances Can Improve Sleep and Reduce Symptoms
Dr. Gordon Bell offers a variety of oral appliances and mouth guards such as TAP® and SomnoMed® at his office in York, PA, to help patients get better, more restful sleep. Both oral appliance options can push the lower jaw forward to open the airway to preventsnoring and treat sleep apnea. Oral appliances are often the first line of treatment for patients with nighttime breathing issues, and can non-invasively improve sleeping habits and quality of life.
The Thornton Adjustable Positioner oral appliance treatment system pushes the lower jaw forward to open airways for easier breathing while asleep. TAP® is unique and allows patients to easily adjust the device while it is in place over the teeth. This appliance can be adjusted nightly to gradually increase the lower jaw range, giving the patient full control over their treatment with conservative and gradual shifts for improved jaw position.
TAP® offers a variety of treatment options, some of which are customizable to fit each patient’s specific needs. The TAP® treatment system offers solutions for snoring and mild to moderate obstructive sleep apnea (OSA). TAP® appliances can also be combined with CPAP (continuous positive airway pressure) machines to provide the most significant benefits for patients.
SomnoMed® oral appliances also work by pushing the lower jaw forward. For SomnoMed® oral appliances, Dr. Bellwill take impressions of your teeth which are then sent to a lab where your appliance will be created. This process allows each patient to receive a fully customized fit for maximum comfort. This appliance is easily adjustable so patients can gradually advance lower jaw range. SomnoMed® is crafted from especially strong materials, making it an ideal solution for patients who clench and grind their teeth. Because it is custom-made, SomnoMed® can be used by patients with missing teeth, crowns, and bridges.
Your customized oral appliance options are created from impressions of your teeth and then sent to a lab. We will take impressions during your first consultation. It can take one to two weeks for the lab to craft your custom appliance. When it is ready, you will come back to the office and Dr. Bell will ensure that it fits properly and is comfortable. TAP® offers some same-day solutions, which allow patients to be fitted in a single appointment and treatment can start the same night.
Dr. Bell can help you determine the best treatment to help restore your sleep so that you feel rested and energetic in the morning.
It can take patients up to a week to become adjusted to their oral appliances. You should, however, be able to quickly notice changes in your quality of sleep. Over the next few weeks and months, you can continue to experience the benefits from treatment. As long as your oral appliance fits comfortably and prevents snoring and other symptoms of sleep apnea, it can be worn every night for years to come.
