March 20, 2010 @ 05:11 PM — by Michele Wallace

Dental implants provide a permanent way to replace missing teeth. Unlike traditional tooth replacement options, dental implants replace both the tooth root and the visible portion of the tooth. Because they are implanted directly into the bone, dental implants are very similar secure and function just like real teeth. Many people can benefit from getting dental implants.

Candidacy Requirements

While most people make good candidates for dental implants, there are some factors that would prevent patients from undergoing this procedure. In general, ideal candidates must be in overall good health with good dental health. Patients also need sufficient bone density to secure the implant post. If necessary, patients may undergo an initial bone grafting procedure to help build up the jawbone prior to having the implants placed.

Treatment Overview

One of the best uses for a dental implant is to replace a missing tooth. The implant consists of a metal post that is permanently attached in place. After a healing period, the dentist will place a permanent false tooth onto the post. The tooth will look and function just as a real tooth, so patients can eat, speak, and smile with confidence.

Depending on their needs, patients can get one or more dental implants. Those with bridges or partial dentures can use dental implants to help hold the dental work in place. This provides a way to eliminate the need to have a full set of dentures.

Treatment Benefits

When teeth are lost, the jawbone begins to deteriorate in that area. Without teeth, the face will eventually have a drooping or sagging appearance. Dental implants can help to avoid this problem. The implants are implanted into the jawbone, preventing deterioration.
